YESTERDAY:

At the turn of the twentieth century—more than 100 years ago—ten women from the Twentieth Century Club of Bennettsville made an historic commitment to their community. Each purchased one book and one donated a large bookshelf and opened her home on Saturday mornings.

And with that one shelf of books, the Marlboro County library was established.

As the little library grew, it became necessary to open a public space—one room rented at the exhorbitant cost of $2.50/month. It was 1937 before the library settled into a permanent space.

"Without question, reading
has been the foundation
of whatever success I
have had in my life."
